A growing trend known as biophilic design focuses on remodeling interior spaces to incorporate elements inspired by nature, mimicking and recreating the natural outdoors. Biophilic design enhances productivity, performance and creativity among those who occupy these spaces; and it is increasingly being brought into homes, offices, schools and hospitals.

The Origins and Benefits of Biophilic Design

The concept of biophilic design originated from the studies of sociobiologist Edward O. Wilson, who explored the idea of biophilia, highlighting people’s inherent affinity for nature. It has been proven that being in contact with nature improves our mood, making us feel more alive, optimistic and even more creative. Studies have shown that exposure to natural elements can also reduce stress, improve cognitive function and enhance overall well-being.

Biophilic design goes beyond aesthetics. It’s about creating environments that foster a connection with nature, which in turn promotes health, happiness and productivity. By integrating natural elements such as plants, natural light and organic materials, biophilic design can transform spaces into havens of tranquility and creativity.

How to Incorporate Biophilic Design

At Efebé, we believe in incorporating biophilic design principles to improve the well-being of individuals and the spaces they occupy. But this trend goes far beyond simply placing plants in an office.

One of the core biophilic design principles is the use of natural elements. This can include anything from potted plants and green walls to water features and natural materials like wood and stone. At Efebé, we integrate these elements thoughtfully to create spaces that not only look beautiful but also enhance the well-being of their occupants.

Using natural materials is another crucial biophilic design principle. Wood, stone, and natural fibers bring a sense of warmth and authenticity to a space. We prioritize materials that are sustainably sourced and environmentally friendly. For instance, our furniture often features reclaimed wood or recycled materials, which adds a unique character to each piece while promoting sustainability.

Natural lighting plays a pivotal role in biophilic design. Exposure to natural light has been linked to improved mood, increased energy levels, and better sleep quality. In our projects, we design spaces to maximize the use of natural light through large windows, skylights and reflective surfaces. This not only reduces the need for artificial lighting but also creates a brighter, more inviting environment.

Incorporating green spaces, such as indoor gardens, green roofs and vertical gardens, is another way we bring nature indoors. These spaces provide a visual and sensory connection to nature, which can enhance relaxation and focus. They also improve air quality by filtering pollutants and releasing oxygen.

Access to views of nature is a powerful biophilic design principle. Studies have shown that even a glimpse of natural scenery can reduce stress and improve mental clarity. Whenever possible, we design spaces to include windows that offer views of greenery, water or other natural landscapes. This connection to the outside world can make a significant difference in how individuals feel and perform.

Biophilic Office Design

A great example of how we apply biophilic design in office spaces can be seen in one of our office renovation projects for TransPerfect. This project involved a comprehensive workplace redesign to incorporate various elements of biophilic design, creating a work environment that supports both productivity and well-being.

We incorporated natural materials like wood and stone into the furniture and finishes, used large windows and skylights to flood the space with natural light, and installed green walls and indoor plants throughout the office. Additionally, we created outdoor terraces with plants and seating areas, providing TransPerfect employees with spaces to relax and recharge.

By integrating these biophilic elements, we not only improved the aesthetic appeal of office but also created a healthier, more inspiring workplace. The positive impact of biophilic design in the workplace was evident: employees’ mood and productivity increased almost immediately.

Biophilic office design is a powerful tool in creating work environments that are not only functional but also nurturing and energizing. And as more companies recognize the benefits of biophilic design in the workplace, we expect to see this trend continue to grow.

By embracing biophilic design principles, you can make your office a place where employees feel connected to nature, leading to improved well-being and enhanced performance. This approach aligns with our commitment to sustainability and our belief that a better-designed space leads to a better quality of life.
